The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for overseeing the law school’s program of legal education.

Proven experience in working effectively with administrative faculty/staff including senior leadership in a higher education role.

Seven years experience and relevant training and/or experience as a dean, associate dean, assistant dean, or chair of an academic unit at a college.

Demonstrated organizational ability, work on multiple projects with competing deadlines and establish departmental goals and workload priorities.

Proven experience in mediation and de-escalation, and recognized leadership and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism within a complex organization. The ability to function effectively within a team environment with demonstrated judgment, analysis, and decision-making skills is highly valued.

UNH Law is situated in Concord, the capital of New Hampshire. Concord is approximately an hour’s drive from Boston, the beautiful New Hampshire seacoast, and the White Mountains. It is part of the University of New Hampshire, a major research institution providing comprehensive, high-quality undergraduate programs and graduate programs of distinction. UNH’s main campus is located in Durham on a 188-acre campus, 60 miles north of Boston and 8 miles from the Atlantic coast. UNH has a student enrollment of 13,000 students, with more than 600 full-time faculty, and offers 90 undergraduate and more than 70 graduate programs.

Duties / Responsibilities Job Duties

Duty/Responsibility

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for overseeing the law school’s program of legal education. Specific duties include: day-to-day management of the school’s academic programs with an emphasis on planning, analysis, and implementation of strategic innovation initiatives to achieve institutional excellence; taking the lead on variance and/or acquiescence applications for new initiatives; supervision of Registrar’s Office; providing guidance and input to academic program directors to resolve curricular and student issues; managing the full breadth of academic programs, including the residential JD, Hybrid JD, Masters programs, certificate programs, preparing course schedules and assigning faculty teaching assignments; selecting, hiring, onboarding, and supporting adjunct faculty; assigning faculty workload in accordance with institutional policy and/or collective bargaining agreement; reviewing course evaluations and taking any necessary steps to address issues; developing and reviewing academic budget amounts and their expenditure within the assumptions, parameters, and guidelines set by the Board of Trustees and/or Provost and/or Dean of the law school, as requested; reviewing scholarship stipend applications and approving travel and faculty account expenditures; drafting academic procedures as appropriate; proposing allocation of merit pay raises for faculty and staff, as requested; and participating in institutional events such as orientation, open houses, alumni events, and conferences.

Duty/Responsibility

The position is expected to collaborate extensively with the Dean and Associate Dean for Administration to ensure funding and administration of an excellent program of legal education that also complies with ABA Standards, AALS Bylaws, and UNH and USNH policies.

The position also collaborates externally, as requested, with the Provost’s Office and other academic units at the University to administer joint programs, work with international or domestic partner schools, and with the ABA or AALS to address issues related to the program of legal education.

The position is closely involved with the work of the Academic Administration and Affairs Committee, the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and Admissions.
